Quality in Diamond Coating

Standards must be adopted

Diamond coatings of moving parts can give truly remarkable increases in performance and lifetimes. The same engines in the same cars using the same fuel will achieve significant increases in hp when key parts are coated with pure diamond coatings. However, the best of the diamond coatings use high-tech material known to the engineers as "amorphous diamond," "diamond-like carbon," "DLC," or "ta-C."

In 2006, what you get on your critical parts when you specify one of these forms can turn out to be anything - there are no mandatory standards. Pure amorphous diamond is more expensive and requires great precision to apply. Dilution with soft carbon and with hydrogen make production cheaper and easier, but performance suffers drastically.

The only way to describe what you have in a diamond coating is on a map.

Formula 1 engine parts OK, coating your engine parts with a diamond coating selected from the "Winners Corner" of the Quality Map is not going to make you able to beat a Michael Schumacher. There is no substitute for great talent and superb engineering.

However, there may be times when some 10 or 20 extra hp. will make a difference, all other things being equal and then...

make certain that your amorphous diamond coating lies in the Winners Corner.
